Poodles on a Mission: How These Furry Crusaders on Wheels are Saving Lives and Melting Hearts
Meet the 71-Year-Old Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Kim Quy who shows unconditional love to furry passengers she drives around Hanoi on her motorbike.
Amidst the bustling streets and colorful markets of Vietnam, this lady is on a heroic mission to save innocent lives. With a heart full of compassion and an unwavering determination, she fearlessly rescues as many stray dogs as she can, saving them from a fate too cruel to imagine.
One Woman's Determination to Give Stray Dogs a Second Chance at Life and Transform a Culture in Vietnam
The former hairdresser has devoted her retirement and monthly pension to rescuing homeless pooches so they don't end up in the wrong hands. In Vietnam, millions of dogs lose their lives annually.
"I often stop on Hoang Dieu Street and sweep it from one end to the other every day. This is what i do so that more people will like dogs."
"My dogs have always been my dearest friends, providing me with positive energy when I'm down. I live half my life for my dogs and the other half for myself. Living with them relaxes me and helps let go of the grudges and bitterness in life."
"My vehicle is equipped with a raincoat and fans. I made the model myself and had it fixed it five times."
Every day, she wakes up at 5 a.m. taking care to clean, dress, and feed her furry companions. After ensuring that they are well taken care of, she carefully straps them onto her trusty motorbike with the utmost care and attention.
"At first, I drove six puppies around on a 50cc vehicle. As I kept taking in more strays, the number of pups kept going up. When I only had a few dogs, I could take them for a walk. But as more their number increased, I thought of a way to build a vehicle that could carry many dogs at once. At first there was only one floor, but then I had to create more so the dogs wouldn't have to be crowded together. I came up with the idea of creating these stair cages to accomodate them."

"I made the model myself and had it fixed it five times. My vehicle is also equipped with a raincoat and fans. I also have a special place at the bottom for any sick dog to lie down. I do this so that my dogs can chill out and enjoy the view while I drive slowly around the city. I drive at 10 km/h, which doesn't damage my vehicle and helps me avoid potholes. I always yield to other vehicles."
All Eyes on Them: The Special Crew's 3-Wheeled Journey Turning Heads
Ms. Quy says the culture is changing slowly and more Vietnamese are adopting dogs as pets and companions.
Her unique motorbike has become a popular sight on Hanoi’s streets. Everywhere they go, people admire, take pictures and record videos. When they stop, many people come to play. Ms. Quy, with her charming poodles by her side, spreads happiness wherever she goes. Watching her furry friends bring joy to others fills her with sense of happiness and fulfillment.

"They have very bright smiles and sometimes they even give gifts to the dogs. They love these dogs very much. I think Hanoi residents have become friendlier to pets, she said.
Looks can be deceiving, but the truth is revealing
The fact that Ms. Quy raised a large number of dogs and wandering the streets every day caused some people to perceive her as "not normal". Her love for dogs made her an outcast, but everyone has untold stories that make them love and live a little differently than you do. Stop judging, instead try to understand.
When asked about her life, Mrs. Quy smiled, but her eyes were red. Her smile seemed to hide the sadness in her eyes. She slowly recalled: "I have been separated for 30 years. Time passed and I realized I'm more fortunate than others - I still have a family and pets in my life and that brings me so much love and joy."
Despite having two loving daughters, Ms. Quy declined their offers to take her in during her old age. She still resolutely chose to live with her dogs. She values her independence and cherishes a healthy lifestyle, preferring not to burden her children with her care.
Ms. Quy's dedication to the cause is admirable as she works tirelessly to provide pups with the care and attention they deserve. We will continue to spread the message and amplify our voices to a wider audience and hope that more people will follow in her footsteps and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of animals in need.
